(Hours 7 & 8)
Nothing much to learn today, just a brush up on my steering skills and a recap over junctions. Quite light in terms of memory overloading as nothing majorly new was introduced which let me relax my mind at ease in front of the wheel for the first time. This allowed me to concentrate on areas I had difficulty with...... steering! Sounds easy to some but it's hard for L plates!
The main problem for me is steering too early, steering too much and straightening up the wheel too late which causes me to drive wavy haha ...not good on a main road, so before driving on one this must be sorted! I did plenty of left turns to begin with and finally mastered the way to steering left within quarter of an hour. The next step was to repeat the same process but turning right instead of left. This was much harder as it involves looking both ways and changing gears at various points, for example, on approach to a closed junction. Haven't quite mastered the right turns yet but time will come...
It ended with quite a shock today when my instructor told me that I would be driving us home after my next lesson. I thought it was a bit early for him to say considering my next lesson is a few days away but thinking back on it now, I believe he has told me for a reason... to be prepared and not to panic. Looking back at my attempts of a right turn today, some were unsuccessful due to other cars on the road. (Where did all the cars come from? There were hardly any on my left turns!) Stalling the car was a slight issue when I became impatient in finding my 'bite' as I saw a car behind me in the centre mirror thinking it would beep at me for my slowness. From this I learnt today that the key to driving is to take your time and not to panic under any circumstance. Panic attacks will only speed up your actions making them imperfect which results in doing it again. This will take twice as long and by then I will definitely have all the drivers beeping at me!
